VANOS ARCHITECTS
WALZ RESIDENCE, BIG HORN, PALM DESERT, CA.
The Big Horn development is located east of Palm Springs at the base of the San Jacinto mountain range. Due to this location, it is cooler than the general area. It has been conceived of as an elegant, elite community with world class golfing and noteworthy desert architecture. The family of a former graduate thesis student of mine at the Southern California Institute of Architecture had purchased a parcel in the development and asked us to design and develop the home with him. The resulting home is a study in the further development of mid-century modern desert architecture. The entire site was developed as an articulated series of terraces to fully integrate the multi-level home into its landscape. The fully integrated design strategy included the structure and all site development as well as landscaping, pools, and terraces.
