Alta Mesa Residence
The Alta Mesa Residence is one of a long line of Single Family Residences designed for Quadrant, Inc. a local development firm created by two brothers. The Alta Mesa Residence is a downslope hillside home built on the site of a previous home which was lost due to damage from the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. The original home, designed and built during the 50’s, was based on a weak understory and sustained too much damage to be repaired. Only the foundations remained when we began our work. The site is extremely steep, and resulted in a top down design with alternating floor levels. The garage and entry area are at street level, living room half a floor below the entry, with the kitchen and dining areas a few feet lower. Below the living room is the Master Suite, below the kitchen are 2 additional bedrooms. Staggering the floor levels allows for a much easier progression between floors and uses, opens up the views to the alternating levels and takes advantage of this very steep site.
